What begins as a quiet life for Nathan Carlisle — a computer programmer living on a remote island north of Seattle — quickly unravels into a harrowing journey across a fractured America. Nate’s struggle with sleep paralysis leads him to uncover a disturbing truth, one that propels him into a quest to find his estranged father and uncover the mystery of his own existence.

Told through time-stamped entries and steeped in eerie, paranormal undercurrents, the story twists and turns through moments of isolation, revelation, and existential fear. What Nate discovers will challenge everything he thought he knew — not only about the world, but about himself.
This fully immersive audiobook features original music, voice actors, and cinematic sound design, handcrafted over six years to deliver a uniquely visceral experience.
Why is it free?
I spent over six years writing The Dark of the Grey and bringing it to life as an immersive audiobook — complete with original music, sound design, and character voice work. It was a labor of love, a passion project that I poured everything into. But once it was finished, I ran into an unexpected wall: most mainstream audiobook platforms won’t allow immersive experiences like this. They want simple narration only — no music, no sound effects, no drama.

Rather than let this story sit forgotten on a cloud drive, collecting digital dust, I’ve decided to release it here for free. I’d rather it reach people — even just a few — than let it disappear behind industry red tape. If you enjoy it, please consider sharing it with someone else who might too. Whether it's motion design, illustration, or writing, I care about craft — about making things that feel like they mean something.

The Dark of the Grey is my first novel — a passion project I spent over six years writing and producing as a fully immersive audiobook, complete with voice actors, music, and sound design. I built it the way I wanted stories to feel when I was a kid: alive, cinematic, and real. When I realized most audiobook platforms don’t support that kind of experience, I decided to just share it directly. I'd rather it reach real people than sit unseen on a hard drive.
